What does the “WESTMORLAND STERLING stamped in letters” mark mean?

Westmorland Sterling Co. was set up in Wallingford, Connecticut, by Wearever Aluminum and Wallace Silversmiths, and production began in 1940. Wallace made the flatware and Wearever handled the marketing. Pieces are stamped Westmorland Sterling on the back of the handle, and the company's ram's head trademark appears on its gift boxes. Watch the spelling. Westmorland has no e in the middle, which separates it from the unrelated Westmoreland Glass Company. The firm moved to Lincoln, Massachusetts, in 1987.
