Some coins belong in a sale

Most silver dollars are common and trade close to their silver. A few are not. Key dates, Carson City mint marks and high grade coins routinely bring more from competing bidders than any single buyer will offer, even after commission. A dealer cannot offer you that route. We can, because we run the sales ourselves. So your common coins get a fair offer today, and your better coins get a market.

What makes a coin worth more than its silver

Three things: date, mint mark and grade. A Morgan dollar contains 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver, which sets the floor under every one of them. Above that floor, the spread is enormous. The 1893-S is the key date of the series with a mintage of just 100,000, worth thousands in circulated grades and six figures in gem condition. Carson City coins carry the strongest premiums in the series. The 1895 proof, with 880 struck, is the rarest of all. Most Morgans are common and trade near their silver content. Telling those two groups apart is the entire job.

Please do not clean your coins

It is the most expensive mistake we see. Cleaning leaves fine scratches and strips the original surface, and grading services will not give a cleaned coin a numeric grade. A lightly toned original coin can be worth several times the same coin after a polishing cloth. Bring them exactly as you found them.

• Step 03 — Get paid. Accept our offer and you leave with a check.

What coins do you buy?

Morgan and Peace silver dollars, Walking Liberty and Franklin halves, pre-1965 junk silver, gold coins, bars and rounds, proof and mint sets, graded coins, world coins and entire collections. If you inherited a collection and do not know what is in it, that is a normal call for us.

Do you buy whole collections?

Yes, and it is most of what we see. Call ahead for anything substantial so we can set aside proper time. We go through it in front of you and separate what is worth its silver from what is worth more.

How much silver is in my coins?

A Morgan or Peace dollar holds 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver. A dollar of face value in pre-1965 dimes, quarters or halves holds about 0.715 troy ounces. Kennedy halves from 1965 to 1970 are 40 percent silver. An American Silver Eagle is one troy ounce of .999 silver. Multiply by the spot price for the metal value. Collector demand sits on top of that, sometimes far on top.

How much is a Morgan dollar worth?

Its silver content is the floor. Common circulated dates trade a little above it. Key dates, Carson City mint marks and high grade examples are worth multiples of it, and the best are worth many thousands. Date, mint mark and grade decide which yours is.

Should I get my coins graded first?

Usually not before talking to us. Grading costs money per coin and only pays for itself on better material. We will tell you which are worth submitting, and we can handle it as part of a consignment.

Do I need an appointment?

We prefer one, and for a collection it matters more, because it takes time to do properly. Call ahead. Walk-ins are welcome Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm.
