What does the “Three small symbols in a row: an eagle, a capital R inside a shield, and a rearing lion, usually with the word STERLING” mark mean?

This is the Reed & Barton sterling trademark most collectors know. You will see three small symbols side by side: an eagle on the left, a capital R in a shield in the middle, and a rearing lion on the right, normally next to the word Sterling. Reed & Barton, of Taunton, Massachusetts, started making sterling in 1889. On Francis I flatware this mark was replaced by the Reed & Barton name around 1950, so dealers list eagle, R and lion pieces as the earlier production. Do not confuse it with Gorham's lion, anchor and G mark.
